En Naen Media – PDNS Attacked, Member of DPR Commission I, Lodewijk F Paulus proposed that Kominfo and BSSN collaborate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to address the ransomware attack on PDNS 2.
Registration of National Police Chief Candidates Opens Today, Thursday, June 27, 2024
“It is said by experts that there are 7,000 keys owned by the FBI related to brain cipher ransom, including the new development of Lockbit 3.0,” said Lodewijk in a working meeting with DPR Commission I with Kominfo and BSSN, in Jakarta, Thursday (26/7/2024).
Lodewijk questioned whether Kominfo and BSSN have already collaborated with the FBI. He hopes that the FBI can still open data that has been locked by hackers.
“My question is how far this cooperation with the FBI is. While we work, it means we can hope that data encrypted by these hackers can still be opened because the key belongs to them (FBI),” he said.
Lodewijk understands the risk is indeed significant if asking for FBI assistance. He returns this option to Kominfo.
“Maybe that’s it, too, there is a risk if we ask automatically we will also leak it to him. But do we want to open or wait with this backup, what is entry again,” he concluded.
PDNS Attacked, BSSN Ensures PDNS 1 Data is Safe Post-Ransomware Attack on PDNS 2
After the Temporary National Data Center (PDNS) 2 in Surabaya was attacked by ransomware, Chairman of the National Cyber and Crypto Agency, Hinsa Siburian stated that data in PDNS 1 is still safe.
“We have checked the data security at PDNS 1 located in Serpong and the Full Side Backup data in Batam, the results so far are still safe,” said Hinsa regarding PDNS (Temporary National Data Center) 1 at a press conference on Wednesday (26/6/2024).
As information, as explained by Hinsa, PDNS consists of three data centers, namely PDNS 1 located in Serpong, Jakarta. Then, PDNS 2 in Surabaya, and Full Side Backup, as backup data, located in Batam.
To prevent further ransomware spread, at PDNS 1 and Full Side Backup, BSSN along with Kominfo and Telkom Sigma have disconnected the two data centers from PDNS 2.
“Telkom Sigma has disconnected PDNS 1 and Backup Data in Batam from PDNS 2, so that Ransomware does not go to other systems,” he said.
Not only that, the three agencies will commit to strengthen the security system of PDNS 1 in Serpong and Backup Data in Batam.
“We have already done this strengthening and our BSSN team is on-site there,” said Hinsa. “Recovery of affected data is currently being conducted by Kominfo and Telkom,” he said.
Data Stolen Can’t Be Recovered?
Although data recovery has been carried out, Director of Network & IT Solution Telkom, Herlan Wijanarko said that data that has been hacked may not be able to be taken back by the government.
“Some encrypted data cannot be recovered anymore,” he said.
Although data that has been taken cannot be taken anymore, Herlan said that some data from the tenant of the National Data Center still has a backup.
“We identify that there are still 44 tenants that are being backed up,” he said. “We are making efforts to reactivate the affected services,” he added.
Not only that, Herlan also said that the Ministry of Communication and Information along with Telkom Sigma and BSSN had contacted the affected tenant.
“We contacted the affected tenants to ensure they had backup data,” said Herlan.
Anticipating data that has already not been able to be backed up, Herlan revealed, the Ministry of Communication and Information along with BSSN and Telkom Sigma will create a new PDNS.
